Seealpsee is a mountain lake in the Alpstein range of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in eastern Switzerland, about 7 km south of the town of Appenzell in a straight line. It lies at 1,143 metres and covers about 14 hectares. The lake can be reached on foot from Wasserauen or from Ebenalp and is a popular destination. A network of paths around Ebenalp links it with other sights of the Appenzell Alps, such as the Wildkirchli caves and the Säntis. The lake supplies hydroelectric power and drinking water to the town of Appenzell, and a mountain inn with a large terrace stands at its western end. The still, dark green lake lies at the bottom of a narrow valley, ringed by steep green pastures and towering grey rock walls that are mirrored on its surface. Snow covers the peaks into early summer, and wooden herders' huts are scattered around it. Visitors walk up from Wasserauen in about an hour, or come down from Ebenalp after taking the cable car up, and sit at the inn on the shore. Many combine it with the Ebenalp trail, and sunset on the lake is a highlight.
