The Seebensee is a natural high mountain lake at 1,657 metres south of the village of Ehrwald in the Mieming Mountains of Tyrol, western Austria, about 4 km south of Ehrwald and 37 km west of Innsbruck in a straight line. It covers about 6.5 hectares and was once larger. The lake is framed by the Vorderer Tajakopf to the east, the Vorderer Drachenkopf to the south and the Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze to the west. No notable stream flows into it, and it drains over the Seebenbach waterfall. The Seebenalm pasture lies to the northeast, and the Coburger Hütte mountain hut stands on a rock terrace above it to the south. The small lake shines clear turquoise blue in a green meadow, surrounded by grey limestone cliffs, and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, can be seen from its shores, mirrored on the water. Sheep and cattle graze the pastures around it in summer. Visitors hike up from Ehrwald on a forest road via the Ehrwalder Alm or on secured mountain paths, and experienced climbers can take a hard via ferrata. The return trip takes several hours, the paths are usually open from late spring to autumn, and warm clothes are wise.
