A broad bay of flour-soft white sand on Lombok's south-west coast, ringed by green hills, with clear water and calm, regular waves, making it one of Indonesia's best places for beginner surfing and one of the island's loveliest beaches for family swimming. Surf schools along the beach rent boards and give short lessons, alongside simple cafes and umbrellas. In the late afternoon village herders cross the beach with herds of buffalo on their way to pasture, a distinctive scene photographers love. There is a token parking fee, with lessons and umbrellas extra. The beach is calmer and cleaner than Kuta. Come in the morning to swim or take a surf lesson, and stay into the late afternoon for the buffalo and sunset. Combine it with nearby Mawun beach.
