An ocean sunset

A long sandy beach north of Kuta, calmer and more upmarket, lined with luxury hotels and restaurants, and famous for stunning sunsets over the Indian Ocean, when the sand fills with people and colourful umbrellas and the horizon turns orange and red. The ocean waves here are strong, making it a surf beach more than a swimming one, and you should swim only between the red-and-yellow flags near lifeguards. A path along it is good for sunset strolls, and behind it Seminyak's streets offer fashion shops and cafes. The beach is free. Note: many beach clubs here serve alcohol and play loud music in the evening, so choose your spot carefully with family, or sit right on the sand. Come an hour before sunset and walk north on the sand towards quieter Petitenget. Beware currents, and do not swim without lifeguards nearby.

For walks and sunset, yes; swimming is for strong adult swimmers between the flags. For calm swimming with children, Sanur and Nusa Dua suit better.
