Lombok's oldest tourist area, on its west coast north of Mataram, with sandy beaches and calm bays lined with hotels and restaurants since the 1980s, facing Bali and Mount Agung across the strait, so the sun sets behind the mountain in one of the region's finest sunsets. On the beach is a small temple on a rock jutting into the sea, traditional fishing boats, and calm water for swimming and snorkelling at the nearby reefs. From Senggigi a beautiful coast road runs north to Malimbu hill, with its famous view over the bays and the Gili Islands, and on to Bangsal harbour. The beach is free and always open. The area is quieter than in the past but remains a comfortable base with hotels at every price, fairly close to the airport and the Gilis. Come in the late afternoon for sunset, then dine at one of the seafood restaurants on the beach. Do not miss the coast road to Malimbu hill at sunset.

Senggigi is closer to the Gilis and Mataram with more services; Kuta Mandalika is closer to the beautiful southern beaches and calmer. Many split their stay between the two.
