Serra da Bodoquena National Park protects about 77,000 hectares of the limestone range that cradles the Bonito region, famous for its clear rivers, on the south-western edge of the Pantanal. It was created in September 2000 and spans Bonito, Bodoquena, Jardim and Porto Murtinho, within the Pantanal Biosphere Reserve. The park is a pocket of Atlantic forest within the cerrado: emerald rivers, canyons and waterfalls, streams that vanish underground and resurface, and limestone caves. Jaguars, cougars and rare fish live here, and the clear rivers Bonito is known for rise in these hills. The park is not yet fully set up for visitors and a concession of its services is being studied, so visits go with guides accredited by the park, while most of the region's best-known sights sit on private farms around its edges. Ask in Bonito or Bodoquena about the tours available inside the park.
