The Serra da Calçada is part of the Serra da Moeda in Brumadinho and Nova Lima, south of Belo Horizonte, and is protected by the Minas Gerais heritage body as a historic and landscape ensemble tied to the memory of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century mining. The range combines old mining buildings and works with rock formations, streams and unique highland vegetation, including the ruins of the São Caetano da Moeda Velha factory and the mining complex known as the «Forte de Brumadinho». Its name comes from the path paved with stone slabs that linked the Paraopeba valley to the Serra da Moeda and joined the Estrada Real. The Forte de Brumadinho was an eighteenth-century trading post that people now reach on foot along upland trails among stone ruins, with wide views over the valleys. The paths are rocky and exposed, so carry water and a hat and avoid rainy days.
