Serra das Confusões, the «Mountains of Confusion», is one of the largest national parks in the caatinga, created on 2 October 1998 in southern Piauí across ten municipalities. An ecological corridor set up in 2006 links it with nearby Serra da Capivara National Park, together forming one of Brazil's most important protected stretches of caatinga. The park sits on sandstone plateaus rising from 350 to 660 metres, ringed by more rugged lowlands with lone rocks, small caves and springs. Its damp valleys hold forest with trees up to twenty metres, bromeliads and ferns, while low caatinga scrub covers the heights, and large animals such as jaguars and anteaters live here. It also has prehistoric rock paintings. The entrance is in the small town of Caracol, which has few services, so many visitors come from São Raimundo Nonato, the base for Serra da Capivara. There is no public transport, tours are impossible without a car or a guide with a car or motorbike, and visitors have reported a gate fee of about R$10.
