Serra de Itabaiana National Park is the closest mountain refuge to Aracaju, capital of Sergipe. It was created on 15 June 2005 over about 8,000 hectares in Itabaiana, Areia Branca, Campo do Brito, Laranjeiras and other municipalities, and brings together two worlds in a small space: Atlantic forest and semi-arid caatinga. Its high point is the ridge top at 659 metres, the second-highest point in the state, with views over the plains to the coast. Its best-known sight is the «Poço das Moças», the «Girls' Pool», a clear basin in a rocky stream, along with the «Gruta da Serra» cave and the «Caldeirão» pool, and the nearby «Parque dos Falcões», which cares for birds of prey. Dozens of reptile, amphibian and mammal species and more than a hundred bird species live here. The park is about an hour's drive from Aracaju and makes a day trip among trails and pools; bring plenty of water and sun protection, and come in the morning.
