And lookouts.
The Serra dos Cocais is a mountain range in Coronel Fabriciano in the Vale do Aço region, part of the Espinhaço geological province. It is made of continuous granite blocks more than six hundred million years old and rises to 1,200 metres above surroundings that average no more than eight hundred. The range holds an important remnant of Atlantic Forest and has been an environmental protection area since 2002, with about two thousand people living on its farms and in its villages. Around 1825 the explorer Guido Marlière laid out a road across it, and later mule drivers used it as a route between nearby towns; in the villages of São José dos Cocais and Santa Vitória dos Cocais, folk groups keep a range of traditions alive. It lies about twenty kilometres from central Coronel Fabriciano, with several waterfalls and lookouts, and is popular for adventure sports such as mountain biking, climbing, rappelling and off-roading. Some roads are unpaved, so a suitable vehicle helps.
