Serra Negra, the «Black Range», is a hill town of about thirty thousand people in São Paulo state, at 925 metres in the Mantiqueira range, and one of the best-known towns of the Circuito das Águas, alongside Amparo, Lindóia and Águas de Lindóia. It was founded in 1828 around a small chapel on the road linking São Paulo to the mines of Goiás, and became a city in 1885. In the late nineteenth century it took in many European immigrants, mostly Italians, who came to work on the coffee farms. Mineral springs were found here in 1928, and it became a sought-after spa nicknamed the «City of Health»; it is one of the state's officially designated mineral-water resorts. Visitors come today for its mild climate, its knitwear and leather shops, and the coffee and cheese farms in its countryside.
