Setenil de las Bodegas is a small town in Cádiz province, southern Spain, famous for its houses built under a huge overhang of rock above the Trejo river, about 13 km northwest of Ronda in a straight line. About 2,600 people live there. The present town grew from a fortified Andalusi town on a bluff above a sharp bend in the river, and its castle dates back at least to the Almohad period of the 12th century. Over thousands of years the river carved deep hollows in the rock, and people built their homes and shops inside them, using the rock as a roof. On some streets a massive grey rock ceiling stretches over the whole road, so visitors walk beneath it between white fronts, restaurants and shops. On others the rock juts out above the houses as if about to fall, and the little river runs between gardens below the town. Visitors stroll the two best-known streets under the rock and climb to the castle tower for a view over the roofs. The town is small enough for a few hours and makes an easy day trip from Ronda.
