Paranaguá is the oldest town in Paraná, founded in 1648, about 91 kilometres from Curitiba on Paranaguá Bay, and the gateway to Ilha do Mel. The state listed its historic centre in 1990, and the national heritage institute added it on 3 December 2009, making it the second town in the state with a federally protected centre. The listing covers the whole urban fabric rather than isolated monuments, including the townhouses of Rua da Praia, once homes of the economic elite, on a stone quay along the Itiberê River now lined with bars and restaurants facing the water. A leading building is the old Jesuit college, home since 1962 to the Federal University of Paraná's Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. A visit can be paired with the famous train ride from Curitiba to nearby Morretes. Check the museum's hours before going.
