The Seven Lakes Route is a stretch of National Route 40 in Neuquén province, linking the town of Villa La Angostura with San Martín de los Andes over 96 paved kilometres through two national parks, Nahuel Huapi and Lanín. It takes its name from the seven big lakes seen along the way, among them Espejo, Correntoso, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, Machónico and Lácar. The road winds through dense forest and snow-capped mountains, with viewpoints, small beaches and waterfalls along it, the best known being the Vuliñanco falls. Travellers take it slowly, as it is narrow in many places with no shoulders, sharp bends and cyclists, and it can ice over in winter. From Bariloche it makes a long day trip: about an hour to Villa La Angostura, then the route itself to San Martín de los Andes and back, or a night there. The road is free; fill up before you set off, as fuel stations are few.
