Azerbaijan's first and largest winter resort, opened in 2012 in the Greater Caucasus in Qusar district, near Shahdag National Park, at altitudes from about 1,435 to 2,552 metres. The resort has around twenty lifts, including gondolas and chairlifts, and more than thirty slopes graded from green for beginners to black for experts, with snow cannons covering the runs, ski schools with local and international instructors, hotels and kids' clubs. The ski season usually runs from the second half of December to early April, depending on snow. In summer the gondolas keep running for visitors, and the heights become a place for hiking, mountain biking and cool mountain air, far from the heat of the cities. Wandering the resort base is free, while lifts, equipment and lessons are priced by the resort and vary by season. It is about three hours by car from Baku, and New Year and Novruz holidays are busy, so book early.
