A botanical garden of about 82 hectares in Xuhui, some 12 km south-west of the city centre, founded in 1974 on the site of the Longhua nursery. It is one of the largest city-run botanic gardens in China, with about 3,500 species of plants from the middle and lower Yangtze region. Its best-known corner is the penjing garden, opened in 1978, with a museum of miniature trees and landscapes in pots; there are also gardens of magnolias, peonies, roses, azaleas, conifers, maples and bamboo, and a large tropical conservatory opened in 2001. Spring brings the magnolias and peonies, and autumn the maples and sweet osmanthus. Entry to the garden has been free since 2022, while the greenhouses, the penjing garden and the orchid house charge separate fees; it opens at 7 am and closes at 5 pm, or 6 pm from May to October, per visitor guides. The nearest metro station is Shilong Road on line 3.
