The great fortified gateway at the eastern end of the Great Wall, whose name means «Mountain and Sea Pass» because it blocks the narrow coastal corridor between the Yan Mountains and the Bohai Sea, the only easy overland route between northern and north-eastern China, which earned it the title «the First Pass Under Heaven». The Ming general Xu Da rebuilt it in 1381 as a square fortified town ringed by a wall about four kilometres long, 14 metres high and seven metres thick, with a deep moat; a tower over its east gate carries the famous «First Pass Under Heaven» board. It has been a national protected monument since 1961 and part of the Great Wall's World Heritage listing since 1987. The gate ticket costs CNY 50, and a CNY 140 combined ticket covers the Old Dragon's Head, the bell and drum towers, the Wang family courtyard and the old-town bus, per visitor guides.

Seafood is plentiful and the city has restaurants run by Hui Muslims under the halal sign, while other restaurants may serve pork, so ask before ordering.
