Sharr Mountains National Park is a mountain reserve in southern Kosovo covering about 53,000 hectares, on the northern part of the Sharr range, which also reaches into Albania and North Macedonia. It was declared a national park in 1986 and re-established in 2012. The park holds glacial lakes, high alpine pastures and deep valleys, and its climate is cold and alpine, with average temperatures from about minus one degree in January to 20 degrees in July. More than 1,500 plant species have been recorded here, along with 32 mammals, about 200 birds and 147 kinds of butterfly. In summer you walk over wide green pastures grazed by flocks of sheep, among sharp rocky peaks and small clear glacial lakes such as Shutman Lake. White and purple alpine flowers grow between the rocks, and in winter snow covers the peaks and people come to ski at Brezovica. Prizren is about 17 km away in a straight line, and Brezovica ski resort about 8 km. Hire a guide for the remoter trails and bring warm clothes, as the weather changes fast at altitude.
