Taiwan's broadest waterfall, where the Keelung River drops twenty metres across a width of forty metres in a wide white curtain into a deep green pool, earning it the nickname the Niagara of Taiwan. Unusually, the water flows one way while the rock slopes the other. A walkway of about twenty minutes from Shifen station leads to it, crossing a suspension bridge over the river and passing through trees to viewing decks in front of and above the falls. On sunny mornings a rainbow forms in the spray. The flow is strongest after rain and in summer and gentler in winter. It is usually combined with Shifen Old Street and the Pingxi railway on a day trip from Taipei. Entry is free; hours change with the seasons, and the walkway closes in heavy rain and typhoons. Taiwan's typhoon season runs from June to October, peaking July to September, so check forecasts before heading to mountains and coasts, per UK travel advice.
