Taiwan's largest and most famous night market, a web of streets and alleys around the old market building that fills every evening with stalls, small eateries and shops, busy with locals and visitors until midnight. The food section alone has more than five hundred stalls. Food is the star: giant fried chicken cutlets, oyster omelettes, grilled corn, stuffed buns, fresh tropical fruit and the bubble milk tea that was born in Taiwan. The surrounding streets have clothes, shoes, accessories and old-fashioned fairground games. Much Taiwanese street food contains pork or is cooked in pork fat, so ask about ingredients before buying, or look for vegetarian, fruit and sweet stalls. Weekends are very crowded. The market starts around 4 pm and runs to midnight, and it is free to enter. Watch your wallet in the crowds. Taipei's metro reaches it easily, and an EasyCard works on the metro, buses and in shops.
