An old fishing town on the east shore of Erhai Lake that has become one of the lake's loveliest spots, with white houses strung along a rocky shore and cafés and guesthouses overlooking the water. Its finest sight is the view across the lake: the soaring Cangshan mountains mirrored in the blue water, with the sun setting behind them in the evening and the lake and sky turning gold. Visitors stroll its narrow lanes between houses and craft shops, take boats to nearby islets, and many spend a night in a lakeside guesthouse for the sunrise and sunset. Wandering the town is free, and it's crowded on national holidays. An overnight stay is best; the drive from Dali along the east shore takes about an hour.
Across the lake.
On the water.
