One of the oldest Naxi settlements in Lijiang, an old town on the Tea Horse Road northwest of the city, part of the Old Town of Lijiang World Heritage Site; since the Ming it has been a centre for leatherworkers and handicrafts. Clear streams running down from the mountains flow through its lanes under small stone bridges, between Naxi timber houses and its little Square Market, with the peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain above on clear days. Shuhe is calmer and less crowded than Lijiang Old Town, so visitors enjoy slow wandering and sitting in streamside cafés, with shops of crafts, leather and silver. Wandering the town is free, and a taxi from the old town takes about a quarter of an hour. Mornings are best; many restaurants serve pork.
