It is the perfect dose, not the grandest: Liechtensteinklamm runs longer and deeper (half an hour away) for epic-seekers โ but Sigmund Thun gives the whole essence in one easy hour on an already-travelled road. For families: this one first.

The Sigmund Thun gorge is Kaprun's magic passage: a rock slit the glacier melt carved over millennia โ 32 metres deep, metres wide โ crossed on timber walkways hung above the roaring emerald ice-water, spray washing faces and ferns dripping the walls: half an hour inside the mountain's water-belly. It is the region's easiest adventure and richest per effort: comfortable stairs and complete rails walked by grandparent and grandchild alike โ ending at the Klammsee lake above with its benches. Practically it is the Kitzsteinhorn's natural pair: on its road in Kaprun โ the gorge hour before the summit, or after, descending. The spray is real: a light layer, and the boards run wet.
