Signal Hill overlooks the harbour and city of St. John's in Newfoundland and Labrador, and most of it, including Cabot Tower, is a National Historic Site. Its highest point, Ladies' Lookout, stands at 167 m, and visitors come for the view over the Atlantic and the stories it holds. Fortifications date back to the mid 17th century, since it overlooks the only entrance to the harbour. The last battle of the Seven Years' War in North America took place here in 1762. On 12 December 1901 Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless transmission here, the event most linked with the place, recalled by a plaque. The small stone Cabot Tower stands at the summit, surrounded by grey rock, tough grasses and views of the city and the Narrows. Walking trails wind among ponds and hills, including Georges Pond and the Gibbet Hill trail looking over the city. Old cannon stand on the slope, the small community of The Battery clings to the rock above the water, and the Johnson Geo Centre is next door. It is 2.5 km in a straight line from central St. John's, reached by car or on foot if you like a climb. Wind and fog are common, so bring a waterproof jacket. Keep to the trails, as some run close to unfenced edges. The light is finest at dawn.
