**One of the greatest poets of ancient Greece, born in this district — and her poetry reached us in fragments.** ✅ **Who she was**: **Sappho** was a Greek poet who lived on **Lesbos** in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, **born at Eresos** by tradition. **The ancients placed her among the very greatest** — Plato called her «the tenth Muse», and she was read and taught across the ancient world. ✅ **Her poetry**: **personal lyric** sung to the lyre — on desire, loss, jealousy and beauty, **in direct, sharp language** unlike the epic verse that preceded it. ⚠ **Very little survives**: **one almost complete poem** and hundreds of fragments — some only a few words — **assembled from quotations in other authors and from papyri** found in Egypt. **New fragments still surface.** ✅ **Why she is mentioned here**: **Eresos was her birthplace**, ⚠ **and her poetry addressed to women** carried the names of her island and her town into European languages — **which is why Skala Eresou has since the 1970s been a well-known destination for women**, with its own season and festival.

**A very long sandy beach at the far west of Lesbos, with a small, relaxed town behind it** — about 90 km from Mytilene. The beach here is **genuinely sand** — rare on shingly Lesbos — running some **three kilometres** with gradually shelving water, and a **boardwalk** behind it of cafés and tavernas directly on the sand. Ancient Eresos is close by, **the birthplace of the poet Sappho** in the 7th century BC — ⚠ **and since the 1970s the town has been a well-known destination for women**, with its own season and festival. ✅ There are also the remains of an **early Christian basilica** with a mosaic floor at the end of the beach. ⚠ The place is **very isolated** — two hours from the capital, with nothing nearby. ⚠ And exposed to wind.
