Europe's greatest underground canyon: the Škocjan Caves (UNESCO 1986) are cut by the Reka river plunging into the earth to carve a hall 146 metres deep — the tour crosses first the silent halls with their stalagmites, then emerges into the roaring canyon: the Cerkvenik bridge 45 metres above the river thundering in the dark, a sight unlike any other cave in the world. The walk is three kilometres with five hundred steps up and down, the lighting dim by design — so it is described as for adults and children over six who can walk. Exit by funicular at the mouth of the collapsed valley, and the park trails above the caves with views over the great sinkholes are free. 80 km from Ljubljana (an hour by car, or train to Divača then walk or bus), paired with Piran on the coast for a full day.
