A cableway of about seven and a half kilometres gliding over UNESCO-listed tropical rainforest, from the suburb of Smithfield north of Cairns to the mountain village of Kuranda, and when it opened in 1995 the longest gondola cableway in the world. The small cabins skim just above the forest canopy, so riders look down on treetops, palms and ferns, with the Cairns coast and the sea on the horizon. A one-way trip takes about an hour and a half with stops. There are two stations where you can get off: the first with boardwalks into the forest and guides, the second with views over the Barron River gorge and its falls, which roar in the wet season. Kuranda has markets and butterfly and bird sanctuaries. A return ticket is A$111 per adult and one way A$74, per the operator. Many people ride up on the cableway and return on the Kuranda Scenic Railway in one day.
