The difference is that it is the highest and the only full unobstructed panorama, but its position south of the centre leaves the old town relatively distant. For a close view over Gamla Stan the Katarina lift or Skinnarviksberget are better and essentially free — SkyView complements them rather than replacing them.

Avicii Arena — formerly known as Globen — is the largest spherical building in the world, a hundred and ten metres across and eighty-five tall. It was built in 1989 as a hockey and concert venue, but its severe geometry made it an urban landmark in its own right, visible from far across southern Stockholm. SkyView is what was added in 2010: two spherical glass gondolas that climb the sphere's outer surface on an inclined rail to the summit. The trip runs about twenty minutes return, and the view from the top covers the whole city, its archipelago and Lake Malaren — the highest public viewpoint in Stockholm. The current name honours the Swedish electronic music producer Avicii after his death, with proceeds going to a mental health foundation in his name. It sits outside the centre on the green metro line, about ten minutes from Slussen station — usually combined with a visit to Sodermalm.
