Smolenice Castle stands on the eastern slope of the Little Carpathians near the town of Smolenice in western Slovakia, about 47 km northeast of Bratislava in a straight line. The castle was built in the 15th century and destroyed in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was rebuilt in the 20th century on the orders of Count József Pálffy by the architect Jozef Hubert, who used Kreuzenstein castle near Vienna as a model. Craftsmen from Italy, Germany, Austria and Hungary worked on it, along with 60 workmen from Smolenice and nearby villages. Since 1953 it has belonged to the Slovak Academy of Sciences. With its two wings, tall tower and pointed red roofs set among the green Carpathian forest, the castle looks like something out of a fairy tale. A large park with tall trees surrounds it, overlooking the town and plains below. The castle is now a conference centre and opens to the public only in July and August, when visitors climb the tower and walk the courtyard. For the rest of the year it can be seen from outside and the surrounding woods are good for walks.
