The Baron of Aracati's townhouse is a two-storey house in the historic centre of Aracati on Ceará's eastern coast, near Canoa Quebrada beach, home since 15 November 1968 to the Museu Jaguaribano, devoted to the history of the Jaguaribe River valley. The house belonged to José Pereira da Graça, Baron of Aracati (1812–1889), a judge, three-time deputy for the province of Ceará, justice of the Supreme Court and vice-president of the province of Maranhão. After him it served as a home, a school, a club and a hotel before becoming a museum. Restoration uncovered original 19th-century paintings under the layers of paint. The museum holds books, old furniture and historic pieces from towns in the valley, among them a war cannon. Aracati's historic centre has been listed by the national heritage institute since 2000. Available opening information is old; check before going.
