Town heart.
The Sobrado dos Pereira is a two-storey house in central Coronel Fabriciano in the Vale do Aço region, built in 1928 by Silvino Pereira, who later became the town's first deputy mayor. It was the first shop and the first brick-and-masonry building in what is now the town centre, alongside the Calado station of 1924. When the Vitória a Minas Railway was laid in the 1920s, a settlement grew up around the station. Silvino, who came from Sergipe, worked as a contractor and brought in waves of workers, mostly from the Northeast. He and his wife lived upstairs and opened a grocery and provisions store on the ground floor. In the 1930s it became the first building in the area lit by electricity, and it remained the grandest building in town until the mid-1940s. It faces the Praça da Estação today and can be admired from outside on a walk around the old centre.
