Socorro is a town on the Peixe River in the Mantiqueira range of São Paulo state, on the border with Minas Gerais, with about forty thousand people at 752 metres; it is one of the Circuito das Águas towns and is known for adventure sports and ecotourism. Settlers arrived in the eighteenth century after Simão de Toledo Piza received land here in 1737, and a village grew around a small chapel built in 1829, later becoming a municipality in its own right. Coffee and Italian immigrants drove its growth in the nineteenth century. The Peixe River runs through its land with many waterfalls, and visitors come for white-water rafting, climbing, zip lines, cycling and motorcycle touring; it is also known for its knitwear factories. Most activities are run by private operators, so book ahead on holidays.
