Sofiyivka Park is an arboretum and research institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in the north of Uman, in central Ukraine, near the Kamianka River. About 300,000 people visit each year, and parts of it recall an English landscape garden. It is one of the masterpieces of garden design from the early 19th century and has been on the World Heritage tentative list since 2000. It holds more than 2,000 kinds of local and exotic trees and shrubs, including swamp cypress, Weymouth pine, tulip tree and ginkgo. A small asteroid was named after it in 1985. You see calm lakes with wooded islands, a small waterfall tumbling over rocks among the green, and iron bridges over the river. Willows bend over the water, wide lawns stretch between tall trees that turn red and orange in autumn, and the park holds grottoes and stone urns. It is about 2 km from central Uman in a straight line. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the Cherkasy region, and opening can change at short notice, so read the current advice before any planning.
