Soglio is a mountain village in the Maloja district of the canton of Graubünden in southeast Switzerland, close to the Italian border, now part of the municipality of Bregaglia, about 28 km southwest of St. Moritz in a straight line. It was first mentioned in 1186 as de Solio. It sits on a terrace on the mountainside at 1,095 metres, at the start of two old mountain passes leading to the Avers and Madris valleys. Most of the former municipality's land is mountain and glacier unsuited to farming. Grey stone houses with stone-slab roofs press together on the edge of the terrace beneath a slender white bell tower, with meadows and chestnut groves sloping below towards the valley. Facing the village rise the jagged granite peaks of the Sciora and Bondasca groups, including the famous Piz Badile. Visitors wander the narrow stone lanes, stand at the edges of the village to watch the peaks opposite and walk a sloping path through the chestnut groves. The village is quiet, and autumn brings the chestnut season and the best colours.
