A forested mountain peninsula rising to nearly 700 metres north-east of Da Nang, about 10 km from the centre, and a nature reserve since 1977. It is home to the red-shanked douc, a strikingly coloured monkey with red legs that look like stockings, a grey body and a white face, and one of the best places in the world to see it in the wild. A scenic road loops around the peninsula past quiet bays such as Bai But and Bai Rang and viewpoints over the city and the mouth of the Han River. The peninsula once guarded Da Nang Bay: the French and Spanish attack of 1858 that opened the French conquest of Vietnam began here. The roads are steep and winding, best covered by car or by motorbike with a driver. Go early in the morning, when the monkeys are most active and before the heat sets in.
