Sopot Pier is a pleasure pier reaching into the Gulf of Gdańsk from the middle of the beach in the town of Sopot, about 12 km north of Gdańsk in a straight line. Sopot is a seaside resort between Gdańsk and Gdynia, and the three cities together are known as the «Tri-City». The pier first opened in 1827 and is now 511.5 metres long, the longest wooden pier in Europe. It has two parts: the famous wooden walkway and the Spa Square on land, where concerts and festivities are held. It also serves as a mooring for cruise boats and water taxis and a spot for watching sailing races on the bay. The long wooden walkway with its white railings runs out over the Baltic, with gulls circling above and swans swimming below. From the end you see the long sandy beach and the resort's old hotels, and a small yacht marina sits at its tip. Entry to the pier is charged in the summer season. Visitors walk to the end and then along the beach, or take a boat to Gdańsk or the Hel Peninsula. Local trains reach Sopot from Gdańsk in minutes.
