A beach on Lagundri Bay in the south of Nias, world-famous among surfers since the 1970s for its long, regular right-hand wave breaking over the reef, counted among the best in the world, drawing professionals from Australia, Brazil and Europe and hosting international contests. For non-surfers the place is a pleasure to watch: sit in a beach café following the riders on the tall blue waves, and the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The beach has guesthouses and simple restaurants and a calm, uncrowded feel. The beach is free. The big-wave season runs roughly from June to September, and the sea is calmer the rest of the year. Swimming over the reef and on big-wave days is dangerous, so swim only in calm sandy spots. The beach is close to Bawomataluo village, so combine them in a day, or stay two nights at Lagundri to live the island's slow rhythm.
