An area of forest and lakes south of Stavanger, the main natural space the city's residents use. Around the Sørmarka lake runs a made and lit circular path of about five kilometres, used by people in Stavanger for running, walking and cycling year-round. The lighting matters here: daylight in western Norway is very short in winter, and lit paths are what makes movement possible at all. Around the lake are pine and birch forest, small marshes and side paths branching into wider ground. This is not remote wilderness: it is a city forest people reach from their homes on foot. But it explains something about Norway — the relationship with nature is daily rather than exceptional, and going out to walk is routine rather than a holiday activity. Free and always open, reached by bus from central Stavanger in about fifteen minutes. The weather in western Norway is markedly wet for most of the year — take rain protection however the morning looks.

Going out to walk is Norwegian routine, not a holiday activity — that is what you see.
Not remote wilderness but city ground residents use.
South of Stavanger
It is not a tourist destination and that should be clear. But if you are in Stavanger for several days and want an hour's walk, or you run and are looking for a route, it is the natural choice. The real destination in the region is Preikestolen, a full-day trip and a serious mountain walk.
A flat rock plateau standing about six hundred metres above the Lysefjord, among Norway's best-known sights. It is reached from Stavanger by ferry and bus then a mountain walk of about two hours up. It needs a full day, reasonable fitness and proper shoes, and the path is very crowded in summer.
