Soure, on the east coast of Marajó, is the island's main town for visitors, and its tourism blends beaches, nature, Marajoara culture and buffalo ranching. Its best-known beach is Praia do Pesqueiro, with dunes and coastal vegetation, named after the royal fishing station set up there in 1786; Praia da Barra Velha has big tidal ranges, and Praia do Araruna is wilder, with stretches of mangrove. Buffalo raising is one of the region's cultural trademarks, and Marajoara pottery is still made in workshops using traditional techniques. River trips on the Paracauari are another favourite. Part of the coast is protected by the Soure Marine Extractive Reserve, 27,464 hectares created in 2001 to protect the mangroves.
