A major botanical garden in north-east Guangzhou run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It grew from a botanical institute founded by the botanist Chen Huanyong in 1929, opened to visitors in 1959 and became a «national botanical garden» in 2022; it is one of the oldest and most species-rich botanical gardens in China. Its display area covers about 280 hectares with 38 specialised gardens, among them magnolias, palms and gingers, and a group of four glasshouses by a lake that look like red kapok flowers from above. The Longdong corner, with its lake and two peninsulas of palms and ancient plant families, was chosen in 1986 as one of the «Eight Sights» of Guangzhou. Tickets cost CNY 20, or CNY 50 with the glasshouses included, and it is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm all year, per visitor guides. Botanical Garden station on metro line 6 is at the gate.
