A triangular sea fortress on a small island at the **mouth of the channel** leading to Šibenik, UNESCO-listed among the **Venetian Works of Defence** of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was built between 1540 and 1547 to a design by the Venetian **Gian Girolamo Sanmicheli**, with one purpose: to stop the Ottoman fleet entering the channel. Not a single gun was ever fired from its walls in battle — its existence alone was enough, which counts as success rather than failure in fortification design. Its form is a triangle pointing seaward, its walls curved to deflect artillery, and beneath them are **vaulted magazines** and gun positions on two levels. Note: **it is reachable only by boat** — there is no road and no bridge. Boats run from Šibenik or the nearby village of **Zablaće**, and the trip takes two to three hours in total including the visit. Note: **seasonal** — trips run mainly in summer, and are cancelled in rough sea. Note: the island is rocky and uneven, with no shade and no facilities.

A group inscription made in 2017 covering **six fortification sites** built by the Venetian Republic in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, spread across three countries today: **Italy** (Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda, Palmanova), **Croatia** (Šibenik with St Nicholas'' Fortress, and Zadar with its walls), and **Montenegro** (Kotor). What unites them is not beauty but a **technical shift**: gunpowder artillery had made tall thin walls useless, so Venetian engineers developed a new system — **low, thick, sloped** walls with triangular bastions covering each other with fire. That system, *alla moderna*, spread from here across the world. ⚠ Zadar, already a destination on this site, is part of the same listing.
