One of modern Alexandria's best-known landmarks and one that appears in countless pictures of the city: an elegant bridge running over the sea at Stanley Bay, opened in 2001 to ease traffic on the Corniche by carrying the road over the water alongside the shore. It is known for its four small-domed towers in Islamic style at either end and its arches curving over the water, overlooking little Stanley Beach and its rows of colourful cabins, a view that has become a symbol of the city. The bridge is lit at night, when it looks its best, and residents and visitors come to photograph it and stroll the neighbouring Corniche, lined with cafés and restaurants overlooking the sea. Its best views are from the Corniche on either side of the bay, especially at and after sunset. Strolling is free, and it pairs with the nearby Royal Jewelry Museum.
