If you hold a **Swiss Travel Pass**, Stanserhorn is the answer without hesitation: fully included where Pilatus is only half price, far less crowded, and the open-deck ascent is something Pilatus cannot offer. If you are paying full fare and have only one day, Pilatus is more famous and more dramatic, and its cogwheel railway is an event in itself. The compromise for two days: Pilatus first, Stanserhorn second — they are not alike.

The Stanserhorn is a **1,898 m** summit above the town of Stans, south of Lucerne, and by a clear margin the quietest of the region's three mountains: far less crowded than Pilatus or Rigi, with a view from the top over Lake Lucerne and its arms and, on clear days, a long stretch of the Alpine chain. But what it is known for is the ascent rather than the summit. The trip begins on an **open funicular dating from 1893**, wooden cars with open sides climbing slowly through meadows, and then changes to the **CabriO**: a double-decker cable car opened on 29 June 2012, **the world's first with a completely open upper deck** — you stand in the open air with no roof and no glass while the lake falls away below. There is nothing else quite like it in Europe. At the top is the revolving **Rondorama restaurant**, which completes a full turn in about 43 minutes, so the view changes in front of your table without your moving. Easy high-level walking trails lead off around it, and food prices are high as on every Swiss summit — coffee and cake is reasonable, a full meal is not.
