A small cove on the southern coast that is **a sea cave whose roof collapsed** — which explains its odd shape. It was a hollow in the cliff; its roof fell in, its walls remained standing, and it opened to the sea through a very narrow gap. The result is a **basin enclosed by two high rock walls**, separated at the entrance by only a few metres, with a white pebble beach at the bottom. The narrow opening blocks the swell, so the water inside stays still and clear even when the sea outside is rough. Note: there are two ways in, and neither is easy: **By boat** — the simpler, and how most visitors arrive, on trips from Komiža or Vis town. But large boats **cannot enter** the gap and moor outside it. **On foot** — a very steep descent from a car park on the road above, about **20-30 minutes** on a rough rocky path, with a much harder climb back. Note: **no facilities, no shade and no water** in the cove itself. Note: **very crowded at midday in summer** when the tour boats arrive; early morning or after four is far quieter.
Almost meeting at the entrance, enclosing the whole basin.
Perfectly clear, because the gap blocks the swell.
Before the tour boats arrive, with the cove almost empty.
Southern coast of Vis
The standard trip combines four sites in a day, leaving from **Komiža** or Vis town. It normally covers: the **Blue Cave** on Biševo — the main draw, whose water glows electric blue between about ten and two when the sun enters through an underwater opening; the **Green Cave** on Ravnik, which unlike the Blue you can swim in; **Stiniva**; and a beach on **Biševo** or at **Budikovac**. ⚠ **The Blue Cave needs a separate entry ticket** and a small local boat to carry you inside, and the queue is long at peak. ⚠ **All these trips are cancelled in swell** — the sea here is exposed; do not book one for your last day on the island.
