The Stob Earth Pyramids are hoodoo rock formations at the western foot of the Rila mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, covering 0.7 square kilometres near the village of Stob. They lie 83 km south of Sofia and about 8 km in a straight line from Blagoevgrad. The columns reach up to 12 metres high and 40 metres thick at the base, mostly conical or mushroom-shaped, and some are capped with flat stones. They sit at 600 to 750 metres on the Klisura ridge above the Rilska River valley, less than 1 km east of the village. They formed from the sediments of a shallow lake that covered the area in the Pliocene. Pinkish-orange earth walls drop into deep ravines, from which rise pointed spires and columns topped with flat rocks. Green shrubs grow between them, with forested mountains behind. A short path climbs from the village to the viewpoints. Keep away from the ravine edges, as the ground is fragile.
