Stolac is an ancient town in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Herzegovina, about 31 km southeast of Mostar in a straight line. It is one of the oldest towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. Stolac lies on the tourist route across Herzegovina linking the mountainous hinterland with the coast, Dubrovnik and Montenegro. Its area has been settled since antiquity for its landscape, climate and water, drawing prehistoric people, then Illyrians, Romans and Slavs, and remains of Roman mosaics have been found nearby. The clear Bregava river runs through the town between old stone houses, lined with stone watermills and old bridges, with fortress walls on the hill above. Rocky hills and orchards surround the town. Visitors stroll the banks of the Bregava among the mills and bridges, climb to the fortress for the view and visit the nearby Radimlja necropolis. The town is quiet and makes a trip from Mostar.
