Brisbane's best-known bridge and emblem, a steel cantilever bridge across the Brisbane River between Fortitude Valley and the Kangaroo Point cliffs, opened in 1940 and the longest of its kind in Australia. The bridge carries cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and you can walk across free on its footpaths, with views of the city towers and the river's bends. It is lit in changing colours at night on special occasions, a lovely sight from the riverbanks. For thrill-seekers, organised climbs go to the top of the bridge on safety lines, with wide views over the city and mountains. Beneath it are the Kangaroo Point cliffs, a favourite spot for rock climbing and for watching the city lights in the evening. Walking across is free and the climb charges. The best views of the bridge are from the Kangaroo Point cliffs park or a river ferry at sunset.
