Sucevița Monastery is a fortified complex in a valley among forested hills in northern Romania, enclosed by high stone walls with towers at the corners, with a church in the middle of its grassy courtyard covered outside in colourful religious paintings in which green dominates. It was built in 1585 by members of the Movilă family. Its church combines Byzantine and Gothic elements. Its walls were painted inside and out around 1601, making it one of the last monasteries decorated in the famous Moldavian style of outer painting. Its courtyard is almost square, 100 by 104 m, enclosed by walls 6 m high and 3 m thick, with a tower at each corner. You pass the gate into the courtyard, walk round the church to see its paintings, follow the inside of the walls and visit the small museum. It is about 17 km in a straight line west of Rădăuți and about 29 km north of Gura Humorului. Dress modestly.
