The Misarova falls

The best-known gorge in the **Slovak Paradise**, and one of the most exciting walking routes in central Europe — because you do not walk it, you **climb** it. The route goes up inside a stream bed squeezed between two limestone walls, and passes directly through a series of waterfalls. The only way past them is on **iron ladders, chains, handrails and timber bridges** bolted into the rock above the water itself. It is about **five kilometres** long with 250 metres of ascent, and takes three to four hours. You pass the **Misarova** waterfall with its long iron ladder, the **Korenový** falls, and stretches where you genuinely walk in the water. Note: **the route is compulsorily one-way — uphill only.** The return is on a separate hill path. This is not a suggestion but a rule that prevents collisions on the ladders. Note: **it closes from about November to mid-June** for ice and high water. Note: **your boots will get wet**, the rock is slippery, and the route does not suit small children or anyone afraid of heights.

**Suchá Belá** is the best known, closest to the Podlesok entrance and has the most ladders — three to four hours, and the first choice for a single visit. **Piecky** is longer, quieter and less crowded. **Kyseľ** is harder and needs more fitness. **Predné** is shorter and suits a first attempt. The **Hornád gorge** is different again: a long route beside a river on walkways bolted to a rock face, with no climbing, and the right choice for anyone who does not want ladders. ⚠ All are **compulsorily one-way** and all close in winter. ⚠ Start early in July and August — the queues on the ladders are real.
