One of the loveliest historic mosques in Malaysia, on the bank of the Muar River near its mouth in the royal town of Muar in Johor, about an hour's drive from Malacca. Work began in 1925, funded by townspeople with the sultan's consent, and it was finished in 1930. Its style blends Western colonial architecture with Eastern forms, in an elegant white and pale-blue building of columns, balconies and arches crowned by a blue dome and a multi-tiered minaret like a lighthouse, so that some visitors liken it to a palace more than a mosque. The mosque is lit in blue at night, when it looks its finest, and around it are a neat garden and a riverside promenade. It welcomes visitors outside prayer times in modest dress, and entry is free. Muar itself is a quiet town known for its old buildings and its local dishes, and it makes a day trip from Malacca or a stop on the road between Malacca and Johor Bahru.
